Novak Super Rooster
The Super Rooster builds upon their standard Rooster platform and offers a more unlimited ESC. It can be used with any single motor, offers dual motor capability down to 15-turns, and can handle up to 10-cells. Combine that with reverse lockout for racing, and the efficient specifications that the Super Rooster has to offer, and you can quickly see why the Super Rooster is a favorite with the electric crowd. Installation Installation of the Super Rooster can be a little intimidating for those unaccustomed to soldering. Since the Super Rooster comes without connections installed, so you'll need to install your own connectors, or directly solder the wires to the motor or battery pack. However as anyone running an electric-powered RC would tell you, soldering is a common task, and you should learn how to do it if you plan on sticking with the hobby. ESC calibration is simple, thanks to Novak's One Touch method. Installation and setup are well covered by the included instructions. Operation The Super Rooster handles any single motor thrown at it with ease. With the heavy gauge wire and high end components used, it takes a lot for this ESC to even start breaking a sweat. Adding to the cell count and getting close to the 10-cell limit, will increase the heat of the ESC though, but the higher cell counts will quickly wear out a motor. So I wouldn't expect too many people to run 10-cells as a normal day to day activity. Dual 15-turn motors can start to stress the Super Rooster as well, but if you're serious about dual motors a Novak/Traxxas EVX might be a better choice, as you'll be able to run your truck at 14.4 volts. Problems I've only run across one problem with the Super Rooster while using it. That problem involves the heat sinks. The heat sinks are just pressed on, and when doing a lot of jumping it's possible that one can work it's way loose and become lost. So I would suggest also buying a set of replacement heat sinks in case you encounter this scenario. Other than a lost heat sink, the Super Rooster has held up remarkably during the time I've used it.
At $120 the Super Rooster costs more than many other reversing ESC's, but in return for that price, it also offers much better specifications and capabilities than most other ESC's provide. If you plan on sticking with the hobby, the Super Rooster can be a good investment. Although you may not be able to take advantage of the fact it has no motor limit in a Rustler or Stampede, you may find that later on that you can take advantage of that if you move the ESC to a touring car or buggy. After all a good ESC could possibly outlast your vehicle itself. However if all you plan on doing with your ESC is using it in an off-road truck, and never taking advantage of the cell limit or dual motor capability, the Super Rooster may offer you less of a value than another ESC would.
